Two standards for the Cellular Internet of Things (IoT) were introduced in 3GPP Release 13: LTE Category M1 (‘LTE Cat-M1’ also called ‘LTE-M’) and Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT). Both standard architectures are designed to reduce cost, improve range, and extend battery life of IoT devices.
