IoT Deployments

Two standards for the Cellular Internet of Things (IoT) were introduced in 3GPP Release 13: LTE Category M1 (‘LTE Cat-M1’ also called ‘LTE-M’) and Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT).  Both standard architectures are designed to reduce cost, improve range, and extend battery life of IoT devices. The following table describes the current number of IoT network deployments by world region.
