At the end of 2016, there were approximately 7.6 billion mobile subscriptions, of which 1,199 million corresponded to markets in the Americas (15.77 percent)1. Within the Americas, the mobile markets of Latin America and the Caribbean share several characteristics. A common feature in the region is a penetration of mobile services that at the end of 2016 exceeded the 111% at regional level2. Of all the markets analyzed in this document, five countries have penetration levels above 140%, and seven more are between 100% and 140%. The remaining seven markets are below the 100% mark. The region also shares a low penetration of fixed broadband lines, while there is a growing base of users using smartphones and mobile broadband services.
