AT&T: No CDMA 700 MHz Voice Roaming Until VoLTE is Deployed
April 6, 2015
AT&T last week held a conference call with the FCC’s Wireless Telecommunications Bureau to clarify information included in the carrier’s second 700 MHz interoperability report.
Specifically, the FCC asked AT&T to clarify a statement that “it may be necessary for some operators to wait until Voice over LTE (VoLTE) roaming is available before operationalizing LTE data roaming.”
AT&T said it can support LTE data roaming for CDMA operators but that voice roaming won’t happen until AT&T supports VoLTE since those operators run voice on 2G CDMA networks. The carrier also expressed doubts that SMS could be supported for customers roaming on the 700 MHz LTE network.
