WASHINGTON, DC - ATIS today announced publication of 5G Reimagined: A North American Perspective, a white paper providing the ICT industry with the definitions and requirements to advance the 5G network. The paper contains use cases describing several deployment scenarios for new networks, building on commonly recognized baseline requirements. It then goes beyond these to also consider disruptive service examples addressing challenges and opportunities for the new network in light of changing business models and user expectations. Based on these all-encompassing use cases, 5G Reimagined identifies the unique characteristics and regulatory requirements of North American networks as well as the other factors it will take to ensure 5G delivers an unsurpassed user experience.
The paper was developed as part of ATIS' comprehensive 5G Initiative, its leadership activity to ensure the new network delivers the long-promised convergence of all services onto a common framework, with corresponding enhancements to efficiency, security and service velocity.
"In 5G Reimagined ATIS not only challenges traditional thinking by introducing use cases focused on maximizing user Quality of Experience," said ATIS President and CEO Susan Miller, "but it also seizes opportunities the new network brings to revolutionize ICT industry business models, including the introduction of new subscription models such as sponsored data and more. Our work harnesses the innovations of the largest multinational Internet-related services and product companies to help advance the new network, and sets the stage for a detailed technical analysis to advance 5G Quality of Experience globally."
The scope of the use cases presented is not limited to only the narrowly defined mobile network. It encompasses interactions with other elements, including some not normally standardized, such as content provider applications/networks, operational systems within a carrier network and traffic scheduling and steering algorithms. Although intended to provide a North American perspective, these requirements are considered in a global context to leverage synergies wherever possible and identifying new requirements only when necessary.
