Behind the 5G Crusade: How to Define and Deliver the Next Generation of Wireless
FierceWireless and Telecom Asia Present: An Executive Breakfast Series at CTIA Super Mobility 2015
The vision of 5G that is being discussed by the wireless industry's leaders is a network that delivers speeds of 20 Gbps, offers extremely low latency and connects billions of devices.
However, there's a problem with this vision: 5G hasn't been defined yet, and it will likely be several years before we see an official standard. Thus, 5G today is more of an idea that reflects the hopes of wireless operators and network equipment vendors.
As with any technology transition, there are plenty of unknowns about the move from 4G to 5G. But what we know for sure is that migrating to 5G will require new spectrum and new (and exciting) technologies. In particular, 5G researchers are exploring high-frequency spectrum in the microwave and millimeter wave bands--bands that until now have been considered unusable for cellular technology. Plus, 5G also will likely incorporate HetNets, or heterogeneous networks, which combine multiple transmitters and wireless technologies into one unified service.
This panel will discuss the ways operators are preparing for 5G--while at the same time making sure their existing 4G networks operate at peak performance. How will these operators incorporate new, disruptive technologies that are emerging as part of the 5G vision? How will they obtain and use new spectrum? And how should operators prepare for growing demand and at the same time deploy new technologies such as small cells, HetNets and more?
